Costume contest winners!!!
First place
prize of a $100 Modells gift
certificate....
By unanimous decision...
Somerset Hills Falcons "Jailbirds"

It wasn't just the Falcons great costumes /
uniforms (prison numbers = initials plus uniform numbers?). We loved
seeing the kids chained together with their cups and bowls. The
penitentiary backdrop and "Most wanted" posters for the Falcon inmates /
teammates were brilliant. The barbed wire on top of the "prison" was
the icing on the cake. Congratulations Falcons, you've earned your prize
money! We hope your guards let you out of the "pen" long enough to spend it!
Second place
prize of a $50 Modells' gift certificate....
We have two winners - each will receive a $50 certificate
(we told you judging was tough - we couldn't pick just 1!)
Berkeley Heights Breakers

What can we say about the Breakers?
When we first saw all the injured players, we quickly checked the
schedule to find out who their first opponent played next. We
wanted to make sure we had a police presence and extra red cards
available at their next game! You can imagine our relief when we
found out that all the broken bones were not only a costume, but this
Berkeley Heights' team's name! We're not sure how many ace
bandages and knee braces a $50 Modells gift certificate will buy, but
judging by the Breakers appearance, I'm SURE we'll find out! |
Branchburg Sirens

Something about the Sirens cast a spell on our judges (ribbit, ribbit).
If we had kept our contest in it's original form (team prize and coach
prize), the Sirens likely would have won the coaches' prize (ribbit,
ribbit). Any
coaches that would wear long orange hair and outrageous leggings with
their team deserve an award (ribbit, ribbit)! Girls - thank your
coaches for being such good sports and enjoy your prize (ribbit, ribbit)!
Now that you've won, can you PLEASE change us back from being frogs (ribbit,
ribbit)...we're running out of flies! |
Honorable mention awards for two
teams that gave our judges the impression that the KIDS put a lot of effort into
creating their own costumes
Scotch Plains Fanwood
Galaxy

The Galaxy shone their way into our judges
hearts. We should have turned off the fog machine BEFORE taking
their photo, but hey - it was Halloween and the fog was an added affect. |
Washingtonville Lady
Nighthawks

The Nighthawks were our only out of state team, 'flying' in from
Washingtonville New York. We hope they enjoyed our tournament
hospitality as
much as we enjoyed seeing their costumes. |
Lastly, not an award, but a big
thank you to Coach Jen of the Madison "Punk" Rockers, whose enthusiastic costume
thoughts for her team gave us the nudge we needed to create our contest.
Coach Jen's spark greatly increased the fun level for 773 kids (plus families,
friends, and tournament volunteers)
who came not only to play some great soccer, but to celebrate Halloween!
Although the Rockers didn't win a costume award this year, they were among the
finalists. We hope they plan on returning as a U10 team next year!
